My fi...It's difficult to get the balance right! My first two dropped their day sleeps super-early (Maxi was 18 months old! Cappers was just over 2) but not grouchy with it. The Badoo was in the same boat your E is in - not sleeping some days and crazy with it. Sleeping other days and up with the owls. The solution for us was to allow a short nap of about 20 minutes only.
